Help needed please. I have just received a marriage cert dated 1919. The groom is George Clapp aged 26, No14850 Private Royal Marines Plymouth. I am unable to find any records for him and would love to be pointed in the right direction if someone can help.

How about this guy?

Name: George Clapp
Year of Registration: 1893
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: St Thomas
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 57

There's also one born 1891.

Does the marriage cert not give a father's name? Would you not like to disclose what it is?

Or ... is it just military records you can't find?

Oops. He has to be the other one, because that one died at / just after birth.

Name: George Clapp
Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Honiton
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 25

In 1901:

Name: George Clapp
[Geroge Clapp] (stupid mistranscription, corrected)
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Charles
Mother's Name: Jane
Gender: Male
Where born: Gittisham, Devon, England

Civil Parish: Gittisham
Ecclesiastical parish: Gittisham
Town: Gittisham
County/Island: Devon
Country: England

Registration district: Honiton
Sub-registration district: Honiton
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Household schedule number: 10

Bessie Clapp 12
Charles Clapp 57
George Clapp 9
Jane Clapp 48

Just in case that was what you were looking for and that's him!

Of course, he could also be a George something Clapp, or a something George Clapp ... eg:

Name: George Frederick Clapp
Year of Registration: 1893
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Exeter
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 82

But if this is the marriage (I'll bet you know the bride's name, too):

Marriages Sep 1919
CLAPP George Hoyles Honiton 5b 68
Hoyles Lily Clapp Honiton 5b 68

Then the birth in Honiton makes sense.

If the father's name matches up, we're in business, or I may just have reinvented the wheel you already had.

Sorry Katherine
Yes you have the right marriage. It is the military records I am having trouble with. Sorry to have not been clearer, I appreciate the trouble you have taken

Alison, records for the "other ranks" in the Royal Marines are held at the National Archives on microform.

The attestation forms are in record series ADM 157 (1790-1923). The service records from 1842 are in record series ADM 159. They include records of some men who served in the World War Two.

See here for more information:-

That is all one address, have had to split it to keep it on the page.
