Margaret ....

Thanks for that info. I have relatives in both Australia and Canada. The Australian ones I know a bit more about so I really have to spend some more time researching the Canadian ones.

A useful link is:

You can try also try http://www.cyndislist.com/

Note that there's no central registry for BMDs in Canada - they're a provincial responsability

Just noticed, Charles that there is a birth of Mary Jane James, 1907 Saskatchewan with father Joseph James and mother Harriett Amanda Stamp.

I was interested in your story about your mom and uncle planning to be evacuated her during the war. I recently made contact with a distant relative who told me that he was supposed to be evacuated here also to stay with an aunt and uncle. He didn't want to go and kicked up such a fuss that he missed the boat. That ship was also torpedoed and all of the children lost.

Margaret

Thank you for your help.

Having look again at the Canada family photos, we have found one with "this is you dear old boy Frank", written on the back!

This links with the ships records; I tried to find the ships record you mention to see if there was any further details on Margaret, without any luck.

Family "history" says she was Irish. Can you help please?

Regards
Paul

Hi Margaret

Nope, they did not emigrate with their parents. Parents names were Joseph and Margaret.

I looked at the 1911 census but got little joy from it. I don't know if there are shipping lists or arrival info which might help. I think one ended up in Saskatchewan and the other in Manitoba.

In 1939, my mother and uncle (who were children) were going to be sent to Joseph in Canada for safety. Then that liner with all the children on it was torpedoed and they were evacuated to Uttoxeter instead.

Do you know, Charles, if they emigrated with their parents?
There's a Joseph James on the 1911 Canadian census who was born June 1883 in England and emigrated 1908. He's with his parents John & Sarah, brothers William and Edmund and sisters Elizabeth, Sarah and Ruth. No Bella though.

Census can be found here:

Margaret

Where can you get the Canadian info. I have two relatives that emigrated to Canada after 1901

Bella James 1880
Joseph James 1883

I have tried to look at the census info but without much luck. We know they married and settled there because my mother remembers their children visiting during WW2 when they were with the Canadian forces.

A Frank Anger emigrated to Canada in 1925, aged 34. Could he possibly be Francis? Would have been born 1891. Or is that much too late? There was also a Margaret Anger age 35 on board.

Hope you don't feel you're being ignored, Paul.
I've done quite a bit of searching but came up with nothing.
Can't find either Alfred or Francis on the Canadian 1911 census.
Can't see attestation papers for either for WW1.
Do you have any idea which province he went to? I had a look through Ontario Vital Statistics but didn't find anything.

My Gt Grandfather Frederick William A(i)nger (1873-1957) had four brothers and two sisters.

All were born in Ingatestone, Essex, England.

We have been unable to find any reference after the 1901 Census of two of the brothers, Alfred and Francis and neither are remembered by my mother.

We know one of the brothers went to Canada probably after 1910, as we have photos of him in Canada and his son came over to the UK in c1949 looking to get my parents to move to Canada.

What Canadian records are available to enable us to establish which of the brothers went to Canada?

(1) Alfred Anger was born 1886 and in UK Census of 1901 shown as a coach builders lad and still living in Ingatestone.
(2) Francis Anger was born June 1891. He is recorded in the 1901 Census as living at home.

Over the years the records have the family name as either Ainger or Anger. My mother name is the latter, but always pronounced "Ainger".

Any help gratefully received.

Paul Goldsmith
