Does anyone know of a way to find out details of Catholic marriages in the USA from the 1850s onwards? |

You need to have some idea of the church they married in and then write to the church sending a donation and hope for a reply! The USA do not have country BMD as we in the UK understand. Each "county" /State is different with different start dates for BMD. I have been looking in Albany NY State for BMD and they do not start in Albany until about 1880 so its not an easy ride. Even going to the States is not an easy ride looking for BMD. We are so lucky in the UK! |

As Janet says, marriages (in fact all BMDs) are a state responsibility, not a federal one - with exceptions for DC and pre-state territories and possibly indians (I don't know re indians), and then each state centralized its records at some point (which varies from state to state). Basically, once you know the state, you can google them to find out how to proceed further. |
