I have my grandfather birth certificate which states his parents names and for his mother it says " Hilda Braithwaite formerly Inman " does this mean that his parents where married as i am unable to find a marriage certificate for them.

Thanks Cindy

Cindy's query relates to a previous thread where she now has obtained a copy of a birth certificate for Anthony Braithwaite

Anthony's birth registration

MMN is INMAN

Year 1938
Qtr Jul-Sep

District Manchester N
Volume 8d
Page 488

Father = Joseph Braithwaite
Mother Hilda Braithwaite formerly Inman

So a marriage pre-1938 is the challenge.

Don't want to put any dampers on but it doesn't necessarily mean they were married at the time .

My paternal grans second hubby registered both the eldest two daughters as if they were married but they didn't marry till the second child was 15 months old Plus he registered mums name by the name he called her and not her registered name .

So looking for a marriage could well be outside the parameters of eldest child born

Similar to Shirley,
On my gran and her 9 siblings certificates, it states Mother Mrs X formerly Y, father X, as if they were married.
However, I knew my g grandparents didn't marry until just before the birth of child number 10 - 25 years after the birth of child number 1!!
Eventually I found a previous marriage for my G grandfather, and the death of his first wife - the year he married my g gran.
