Thanks again to everyone for your help, sorry I didn 't understand that birth certificates were not available prior to 1837 but I do understand now and will look for parish records - must have been a senior moment!

There is no such thing as a birth certificate for someone born in 1823 (nor for anyone else born in England/Wales prior to July 1st 1837 or Scotland prior to Jan 1st 1855) so you won't be able to order one.

As Joy has said above, the best you can get is a record of baptism from the parish records. A date of baptism is not the same as the date of birth.

Thankyou so very much to everyone who replied to me, I am really grateful. I have the marriage certificate which does give me his father's name and occupation. and I have ordered his death certificate to-day. If you don't mind me asking will I now be able to order the birth certificate with the information that I was given. By the way I paid 7 Pounds (ZAR 105).

you cant get certs of any sort pre sept qtr 1837 cos they didnt exist, the best you can hope for is to get a copy of the parish record ,, have a look at the Family Search site.

His marriage cert will tell you the name and occupation of his father.

Civil registration records for births, marriages and deaths started for the July quarter 1837. The record of his baptism would be in parish registers. I shall nudge (bring forward) a couple of threads that I hope will help.
