Reference Checking for same names on GRO certs?

Hi

My ggggg grandmother Ann Roberts was aged 74 in 1851 living at Surrey Place in Bermondsey. She had died by 1861 and was widow of Thomas Roberts. But there were 3 Ann Roberts deaths in Bermondsey reg District, one in 1855, one in 1857 and one in 1858. Is there another way of saving money without having to send off for all 3 as I know of a ref checking option but can the GRO search all 3 to see which is the right one at all if I give a few details?

Thanks

Ben

I was wondering if they would check her age at death? Its such a pain with a common name and of course you dont get ages til after 1861?

Hi Heather. She'd have been around 78 to 82 in 1855-1858 I guess, as ages on the censuses arent always accurate and the actual indexes dont give the age until 1866.

See: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-order-online.asp particularly Q15-16. One possible option is to look up all 3 Ann's in 1851 to check only one lives on Surrey Place, and then specify that as p.o.d. to be checked, which might cost a total of 7/10/13 quid, depending on you luck as I read their FAQ.

Shame it is pre 1900 as Southwark Council can't supply copy certs for pre 1900 events, in this instance you can only go via the GRO.

If they (Southwark) could you could specify as much info as you like and they would check without making a charge for ref checks. If they can't supply the cert then you don't pay anything.

Re the GRO order, i would be very cautious as to what i entered as a checking point, they only issue the cert if EVERYTHING matches, for instance if you put "wife of John Smith" and the cert says "wife of J Smith" then you wouldn't get the cert but would only get a part refund.

If she died away from home and you put pod as her home addy then they would not supply the cert as the info does not match.
