which surname on the tree?

if someone was registered in one name then re registered in a new surname a year later which surname do i put on my family tree?

have you got the certificates?
did the mother remarry? I'd put the original one I think.... but make a note on there

no but i know she was registered as mothers surname then reregistered as the mother got married so they changed the surname to the fathers

If the man the mother married was the biological father, the child should be recorded under his surname......if not, use the mother's maiden surname.

But how would you know if he was def the father?

Then I would use the father's surname. If you were to order the birth certificate I'm pretty sure you would get one with the father's surname on it.
You could mention in your notes that the birth was first registered in the mother's maiden name.
