Missing family in 1871 - help please !

Hawthorn

In 1861 John Lester (b.circa 1831 Hutton le Hole, Yorks.) and his wife, Sarah J (b.circa 1833 Whitby, Yorks) were living in Hartlepool, Co. Durham. They had a 2 month old daughter called Mary E.
I can find no trace of this family after that, not even in the 1871 census. Thinking they might have emigrated I looked on Find My Past, but passenger lists leaving the UK are only from 1890. Can anyone offer any help . . . . please?

The surname is Lister, not Lester.
