My gt gt grandfather died in 1893 of phthisis, 6 months diarrhoea.
would this still be tuberculosis, or would it just be classed as wasting disease?? as what would diarrhoea have to do with tuberculosis.
The whole family vanished after 1891 census, wondering if they all died of tuberculosis?

I suppose the diarrhoea could, in theory, have cause him to get dehydrated and so could have been the immediate cause of death, but if he had had TB for six months his body might have been more weakened than usual.

As you say, Joan, maybe it was listed because they weren't quite sure what killed him - could have been some kind of food poisoning.
