thanks joan...i obtained all my ancestors back to 1776(elizabeths babtism) thru the CPRdb site...there`s no sign of ralphs birth or his marriage to mary on CPRdb...so i`m tending to think that ralph was born outside cheshire...Backford Hall was a very large mansion and estate in the 1700`s and i`m thinking that ralph went there for work....i`m still none the wiser except for the marriage of ralph oakes to mary butterton in norton in the moors in 1764....this is 12 years before elizabeths birth..seems a long time to go in those days before the birth of their 1st child...not optimistic about this marriage...regards...allan...added..ALL backfords records are on line ,(very lucky) so thats why i`m convinced ralph and mary were from another county...malpas(about 12 miles away,)is the only parish i am aware of that isn`t up to date online in that area...allan

The Backford Parish registers are likely to be in the Chester records office, google for the address etc and check with them

About Ralph's marriage...it would have been in Mary's village so check the nearby places..they reckon a radius of about 20 miles from the chap's home!

I had a quick look at the NA site but didn't see any obvious Oakes wills.

thanks sam and jo-anne....prestbury is about 40 miles from backford,so i don`t think there`s a connection there...i`ll check for a will and also familysearch...let you know my findings...regards...allan
added..just been on familysearch..the only marriage possible for ralph and mary oakes within 10 years of the birth of their first born elizabeth is....ralph oakes and
1764 mary butterton...in norton in the moors,staffordshire......but this is by no means them...but its all i have as a possibility...allan

Parish records are usually kept at the County Records Office, not the church so you need to head there.

A will could prove that Ralph and William were brothers at the very least. Go to the National Archives website and you can search by name/area.

Can't answer your question....I quess you need to go and immerse yourself in parish registers...

But there are some possible marriages for Ralph and Mary on the familysearch site.
Also , have you checked the national Archives for wills?
Good luck

hi..the earliest record i have from st oswalds church in backford cheshire for my family are these.
babtism elizabeth oakes b 1776..parents ralph and mary.
marriage william oakes - margaret griffiths 1779 12 oct
burial samuel oakes 1792 .parents william and margaret
my query is this....my Direct ancestry is with elizabeths brother Daniel Oakes.parents Ralph and Mary....there`s no record of ralph/marys marriage or births in backford.
am i wrong to presume that Ralph and William were brothers who had recently moved to backford prior to 1776,elizabeths birth???..regards...allan
