I think this also highlights the problems of dealing with Pay per View sites in general.

The thing we forget is that you also have to pay to to confirm that the information is not the one you wanted, and it all then becomes a vicious circle.

We tend to forget this when using a subscription site such as Ancestry - how many times have we looked at ten records only to find what we want in the last one?

Ireland is very difficult on-line. We have only found one bit of info on-line and that is from the recently published Dublin Census, which is free. All other searches have come to nought. On-line BMD's would be nice, though.

I have been given tremendously helpful advice when I have subscribed (free) to rootsweb mailing lists for various counties in Ireland

The AncestryIreland.com one is £30 to join, and unless you are lucky, probably doesn't have many records of interest transcribed as there is not too much on it, and you have to pay to access the records. The worst bit is that you cannot even see if the record is of interest before you pay to see it. E.g. If I'm looking for a death of a Joseph Patrick Murphy in Antrim, I can't see if there is one, I can only see Murphy deaths in Antrim... I have to pay to see they are actually Dominic Murphy, Charlie Murphy and Sarah Murphy etc and therefore of no interest to me. The credits are generally a couple of pounds each. It costs a fortune. I paid out about £60 in credits after my £30 registration in desperate hope I would find something but found nothing in the end. I think this site is a rip-off. I don't mind paying for records but you feel cheated paying £90 out and getting absolutely nothing back because they simply don't have anything on any of your relatives because their records are so sparse. I am quite net saavy and I wouldn't pay for records if I could see they were not of interest, but this site makes it impossible to see if they could be of interest or not, which I think is unfair. Most other sites don't expect you to part with so much money without giving you any idea of whether there is likely to be records of use to you.

Have a look at his (Brian) website and you will see what he charges to search Parish Records and the Civil register etc. Also does some FREE Lookups in Griffiths Valuations etc.

I'm not sure if Brian is back on his feet yet though. He went into hospital back in November. I had requested some more searches and his wife got back to me and told me that he was in Hospital. Haven't heard from him since so perhaps he's still not well enough to continue his work.

You can have at his website anyway just to see what he has to offer.

margaret my counties are mayo,cavan and monoghan. Mayo is the most difficult to access.

There must be an easier way(hopes!!) will let you know if I find it .

Sue, I subscribe to Ancestry U.K. & Ireland., but have been unable to find anything for my Irish relatives.

My cousin lives in Co.Wexford but has to go to Dublin to find any records.

My particular County has recently come 'on-line'[ but at 10 Euros a shot it's expensive.

Someone, somewhere, is sitting on a 'gold mine'.

seems they take all for a ride. I have just been having another look at Irish sites and yep all as bad as each other.

Liz- only a couple im afraid and they were mainly ones set up by fellow researchers (obvious why!!)
Depending on which area you want just google it.eg: Kilnaleck ancestors or Mayo ancestors etc.
I stumbled on info this way and found a census(1821) in Kilnaleck, Cavan listing all families in the area. I think I have a good lead from this so worth a go. Takes a while to find stuff but free.

Strange that there are 2 big families of Farrells on it that the Emerald Ancestry site has no records for !!!
Unfortunatly you cant look up records which is why I subscribed in the first place.

Margaret- what we need is the irish equivalent to Ancestry uk. or findmypast (im subscribing to both)

Teresa - how do you do that and what does it cost if you dont mind me asking? Im even more irish than I thought!! lol so have alot of research to do in ireland. Im stuck in UK 1841 until I find a good irish site. I honestly dont mind paying as long as I get what im paying for.

I subscribed to one too. They searched the Griffiths Valuation for me, but never found anything else after that.....and you had to pay extra for the priviledge!

Had much better result by hiring a researcher in Ireland. I asked him to search various RC records is several Parishes in Co Dublin where I know some of my Gran's siblings were born and her parents were married . Got him to list all Brady's details within those parishes and a set date span. As he was looking for mine for the same price I though I would have all the others too...just in case.

Within 2 weeks he came up with loads of stuff. Not subscribing to any again!

Been there done that...

And if you can believe it www.ancestryireland.com is even more expensive!

Ireland is very difficult to research even for those living there. Unfortunately very little is available on-line and what is, is very expensive.

Im furious fumming and fed up ...as I have just subscribed to Emerald Ancestors and its rubbish. All my searches are coming up as "no results" and that includes ones I have done on other sites so there should be results!!!

The so called "unlimited access" for members to records means WHEN and IF you do find a match that you still have to pay to view it. (£4) a go if ive read it right. Ive found more for free.
