Can anyone please look up a departure to America for me ??.

Passenger is Peter Sinclair b.1839 in Orphir, Orkney, I have him on the 1871 census with his wife Margaret, children William b 1860, Margaret b 1867, I dont know if there were any more children, I have 1 son born in Brooklyn in 1874, they are back home again by 1878, because I found another child born here.

It would be great to get info on where he left from and where he arrived etc.

Thanks
Sandra x

Thanks Jan, that is them, I have them on the 1871 and 1881 census, but their son born in 1874 called James was born in Brooklyn New York, they then have a child in Orkney in 1878, so they didnt stay long in the USA, it would be nice just to know where they left from and where the arrived.
thanks again for your help.

Hi Sandra,

Not sure, could be a possibility on Castle Garden website?

I cannot find a Margaret born around 1867 but there is a Mary Jane listed at 5 years.

Sandra, this might be them though the ages are out by about 5 years (though people did lie about their ages as you know). They are aboard the Europa from Glasgow to New York arrival 10th of June 1872.

"Peter Sinclair, 28, Seaman, Margaret Sinclair 30, William 12 and Mary Jean 5."

If you think this may be them I can PM you the image.

The IGI has a Margaret Jane SINCLAIR born 15/7/1866, Stromness to Peter SINCLAIR and Margaret GRAY. On re-examining the immigration image it could well be "Marg. Jane" not "Mary Jean"; the age of 5 also fits the birth date. Also IGI gives William's birth as 1/10/1859 which fits the age of 14.

I have sent you my email so that I can forward the image to you.

Hi, Jan, do you know if only James was born in the USA, I thought the 2 children after him were born in Orkney.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for pointing that out, I will now look and see if the other Sinclair could be Peter's father.

Thanks again.
