Hi LfW

Did you have to have the names of both parties and dates or just an idea of the timeframe?

Hello all

Many thanks for all the replies, my apologies for not answering but been offline for a few days.

I think it may be a trip to Kew or maybe even Scotland

You should be able to look at the bmnds...called the GRO now, previously St Catherine's Index, at your local records office or large library. If your father's name is fairly uncommon it will be easier...otherwise take lots of coffee and biscuits! Do you know where he micght have been living?
Good luck

Joan

Thanks for your input.........I was not aware of the details you have so kindly posted. I must confess to assuming that the papers would be held 'in perpetuity'.

Divorce is not an issue I have had to contend with in compiling my family tree, so I was unaware of the true situation.

I should have checked...........!!!!!

Hi Vanessa.

Well the FRC at Islington is now closed for BMDs. they are in the process of being transferred to Kew ,BUT, I do believe they wont be searchable in the same way as the big ledgers are being microfiched and then archived. .

Your best hope would be to track down the divorce and obtain the papers. The wife's name would be on them, and possibly the name(s) of any child(ren), if there was a custody issue.

Can anyone help. How can I find the first marriage of my Father (who is deceased) when all I know is he was divorced prior to 1966. I have no idea when or where or even who he married, but I think it would have been after 1939 and before 1952. Can someone give me any pointers. Thanks Vanesa
