Just received death certificate for Mary Ellen. She died in Whittingham Hospital, not Winwick, hence the reason she was registered in Preston.

It just shows you can't always trust the stories handed down through the family.

Hi Carter,

Mary Ellen's maiden name was Redfern. Married name Bryan. She was born in Pendleton in 1852.

Still around in 1881 census. (listed as My.E. Bryan) In 1891 census her husband, Benjamin is with Annie Moores (probably remarried). Therefore assuming she must have died in that 10 year period.

The story has come from a living relative but could well be totally wrong as we all know.

I also live not far from Warrington but am unsure as to where the records may be held.

Thanks for any help

linda can i ask a few questions please.
mary ellen redfern i presume that redfern was her married name ? what was her maiden name. where was she born and when was the last sighting you had of her. why do you think she died in winwick hospital. i live quite near the site of the old hospital now a up market housing estate although there is still a hospital on some of the grounds which helps people with problems to return back into the community. i live not too far from warrington and the church at winwick st oswalds is a fabulous old church. give me some info and i will see what i can do - no promises ok
cheers linda x

Hi just googled Winwick hospital and it says it was built in 1897 ten years later than your death occurred maybe this was another hospital and not the asylum

I know Winwick is in Warrington area, but could she have lived in Preston, and just been in Winwick,as they are both at that time in Lancs, and could have been registered by a relative in Preston?
As far as I know,it was a mental hospital, and people were sent there from quite a way away.

Hi Suzane,

Mary Ellen was still alive in the 1881 Census but her husband, Benjamin had remarried by 1891.

In that 10 year period the only death I could find was registered in Preston, Jan/Feb/March quarter1887, ref. 8e 481 but I now think this is probably the wrong one.

I'll keep looking.

Thanks,

Linda

Mary Ellen Redfern, born about 1853, supposedly died when she was 34 in Winwick Hospital.

Help please. Does anyone know if a death, which occurred in Winwick Hospital about 1887, would be registered in Preston.

Many thanks
