Does anyone know of a method to allow me to search records, internet sites etc for family surnames such as Done and Elder.
I`ve tried every which way but I just get thousands of items in which they appear only in sentences such as `it was done` or `he was the elder son` but never as surnames.
Jay.

It sometimes works if you put the names in apostrophes "Done"........."Elder"

Can't guarantee it............

There are many instances of both names on Ancestry..........

There are loads on ancestry. Where in the UK are you looking for these people and I will have a quick look for you.

Thanks Reggie and Jane.
I`m afraid the apostrophes don`t work.
I`ve found their info on Ancestry, the IGI and Family Search but it`s when I want to use other sites that I get a block.
A2A tell me that their computers can`t cope as they don`t recognise them as surnames. Seems like all of them have the same difficulty.
Thanks again. Jay
