Bill, I am sure it said 78 against the name of John Coleman in the MARCH quarter of 1953!!

As for the disparity in ages. My great grandfather was 25 in the 1881 census and claimed to be 34 when he married a 39 year old widow with whom he had been lodging, in 1884.

Don't ever discount anything until you are absolutely sure of the facts!!

thank you victoria and shirley owe you drink apiece for your efforts.John was married in st peters church liverpool but its funny because his grandson says theres is story of a catholic priest trying to get money from them and john bashed him up for taking it!! i checked newspapers from that time but nowt there. The john coleman who died in liverpool 1953 was 61 not 75 which leads me to think he lied because he would of only been 23 24 when getting married and she was 37.That john is probably one of the suspects as hes on 1901 census and father is john too.
thanks

There are two births of John Colemans in 1876 in Liverpool -

Name: John Coleman
Year of Registration: 1876
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Liverpool (1837-1934)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 71

and

John Coleman
Year of Registration: 1876
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Liverpool (1837-1934)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 82

You could use father's name as John as a checking point.

Then there is -

John James Coleman
Year of Registration: 1876
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Liverpool (1837-1934)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 64

and, finally -

Name: John Coleman
Year of Registration: 1875
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Liverpool (1837-1934)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 52

These are the mostly likely.

Hi Bill,

If the John Coleman who died in Liverpool is yours, his death certificate would indicate that he was 78 in 1953, meaning his year of birth would have been 1875.

You said he lied on his marriage certificate. Maybe he really wasn't sure of his age - BUT, if he was lying, why?

Anyway, what about this one from the 1881 census? It would appear that his mother is a widow who was working in a cotton warehouse. She was born in Ireland as were the couple with whom they were boarding. Lodger was originally written as their position in the household and it has been crossed through and boarder written over the top. They might have been related - Celia Cain and Mary could have been sisters.

Name: John Coleman
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876
Relation: Boarder Son (Boarder's Son)
Mother's Name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Liverpool
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Street address: 16 CT 8 H Nailor St
Education:

Employment status: View Image

Household Members: Name Age
Andrew Cain 40
