Susan

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/

Will take you to the Genuki page where you can download a place name index which will show what registration district it was in at any time after 1837.

Once you have the registration district you can then look at

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/

Which gives more detail about the area.

Interestingly Canning Town is not in the index but by google I found it was part of West Ham so I went straight to the registration district list, clicked on West Ham and in the list was Canning Town.

WEST HAM REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Registration County : Essex (1837-65); Greater London (1965-67).
Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.1.1968 (succeeded by Newham district).
Sub-districts : Canning Town; Forest Gate; Leyton; North East Ham; North Leyton; Plaistow; Silvertown; South East Ham; South Leyton; Stratford; Walthamstow; Walthamstow East; Walthamstow West; Wanstead; West Ham; West Ham Central; West Ham North East; West Ham North West; West Ham South; Woodford.
GRO volumes : XII (1837-51); 4a (1852-1946).; 5A (1946-65); 5E (1965-67).

So not in the areas you have found.
Maybe the lady went home to her own mum to have her baby, common for a first baby. Alternatively he didn't really know where he was born and just named the first place he remembered living.

Hi Soosie,,
I live in Lincolnshire and know that Lincoln is a loooong way from Canning Town,
Have you tried GENUKI?
Its quite good at showing places and the areas surrounding them.
Canning Town is in the East End of London.
Barrow could be Barrow in Furness in Cumbria,,or Barrow in Lincolnshire,
Lichfield is in Staffordshire, Lymington is in Hampshire and so is Portsea. Guisborough is in Yorkshire,
Hope that helps,,

Absolute newby here so please forgive any stupid q's. I have tracked down 5 birth records that could be relevant to me but am confused with the districts listed. I have a birth place listed as Canning Town England on a document and in the records can find the following: Lichfield, Barrow, Lincoln, Lymington, Portsea and Guisbro'. Are any of these remotely near Canning Town?
Cheers Soosie from Aus
