	I would imagine that it was a surname somewhere further back in the female side of the family and given to the child as a first name to keep the name going in the family. Kath. x

Thanks Kathleen that may be the case, the name appears at least twice in the male line. I just wondered if it could be a nickname for a job. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know.
