no they don't mind at all and are very helpful. Well, the ones in Trowbridge are in my experience. As Heather says they may have limited opening hours, that may be on the website.

You may have to ring them first to find out when they are open.

But if you are passionate about research then Im afraid it will involve spending money in the form of certificates to verify info and get further information to work on - £7 a time from GRO online (NEVER pay more - some scam sites charge up to £50 for the same cert). And you should consider a sub to ancestry.co.uk - you can take a free 14 day trial.

Thanks for that Pat.
Do they not mind you just coming off the street as asking for help?

If you have Church of Latter Day Saints (aka The Mormons) near you, you can order a microfilm of Parish Registers to view. For a small fee the film is available for a month but you have to visit them to order and pay in advance. You can then go back as many times as you need to view the film. The family search site mentioned above is run by them and will show you where the Churches are. I have found them invaluable.
Good luck

Thanks, I'm still having problems finding info. I think I will have to plan a weekend away.

The IGI that Michael mentioned is free; also, some parish registers online - I shall nudge a thread about them for you. Also, there are the online parish clerks for certain counties - volunteers who do lookups for people - I shall nudge a thread about that, too.

Hi Susan,

Can you recommend a site as all the ones I have been searching are pay ones.

Thanks

The IGI?
Eeek - can you tell I'm a newbie?
I will try the local online records, good idea.

Hi Karen,

Have you tried the IGI site? Also google your village/town for Parish Records - there are quite a few on-line now.

Is there any way of finding out who your ancestors are and the parents of those listen in the 1841 census without going to the area that they are from?
I live so far from where my family is from and am still passionate about tracing them and any additional information I can find!
Any information would be great.
Thanks
Karen
