Thanks Sue,
will double check what it says.

The 19 year old would have been under age and the actual record would record whether he was of full age (ie over 21) or not. Until relatively recently anyone under 21 needed parental permission to marry and that was recorded.

So if the document says he was of full age that means it was the 25 year old.

hI

I have a few like this I'm struggling with.

Have you checked the death registers to see if any Johns died before the marriage and the marriage register for any earlier marriages that would fit the older one.

Also names of parents , siblings - do they match known family names.

The only other thing you can do Ithink is to look at other documents at the RO to see if his name crops up which might help you sort them ou

In 1786 John Topham, married Margaret Hopley,in Nantwich Cheshire.
I am looking in the Cheshire parish register database,
and have found 2 possible births, for John

1st born 1767,which would have made him about 19 when he married

the other is 1761,so he would have been about 25 when he married.

Any ideas how to work out which is the correct one will be most appreciated,
also how do I get any info on Margaret Hopley,
she doesn't seem appear in the Cheshire register,
which I was hoping,
so I have no idea where she was born.
