A marriage in February would appear in the March quarter in the GRO indexes as this covers Jan to March so the GRO reference matches the marriage you have found on the IGI.

I would recommend checking the original image on FreeBMD to make sure the name has been transcribed correctly.

In any case, both the IGI and the GRO indexes are transcripts anyway so either could have an incorrect name listed.

If you can get hold of a copy of the original parish register or a photocopy of the original marriage cert from the local register office (rather than the GRO) you should be able to see the original signature and how your ancestor spelt his surname

The IGI is a copy of Parish records (from churches)......the GRO is the record of civil registration, and uses ref numbers for identification.

The two systems are not connected.........

Sam Yes thats why i am getting confused. The census for 1901 does match.
Sorry same just reread your post ,i'll go look for that one,1871.
Yes just echecked the 1871 and it matches

I think thats why i am getting confused.

I mean i know to confirm it properly it is best to get the certs but it looks solid at the moment till he threw his spanner, lol.

Thank You Tina

If you find Emily and George Tuthill on the 1871 census do Emily's details match those of the Emily you are looking for?

Tuthill/Tothill could easily be the same person, it could be mistranscribed, mis-spelt or anything so I reckon the IGI and the freeBMD marriage are most likely the same one. In my family I have Limer/Lymer and Poyser/Poyzer - the spelling varies depending on which records you look at and which family member!

As for William Tuthill, can you find an Emily on the census married to William Tuthill?

I am in contact with another person searching for the same family name as my self but i am confusing myself or i might be being stubborn and think i am right so i am asking for help.

We are looking (thought i had it,lol) for the marriage between Emily Nunn and George Tuthill ,Blything Suffolk. (1867 q1)

An Emily Nunn is shown in free BMD as marrying one George Tothill (not Tuthill) Tothill George Blything 4a 797 in March 1867

but the IGI lists the marriage as Emily Nunn (father William Nunn) marrying George Tuthill (correct spelling) on Feb. 20th. 1867 in Bramfield, Suffolk....only way to verify would be to send away for a copy of the marriage certificate.

Is the only thing wrong the date ,i mean i cannot find an exact date on any of these sites i thought Q1 would have been right?

However he has now found that it was a William Tothill not Tuthill and i am sure i found it as Tuthill as i use only Ancestry and freebmd.

Sorry if this is confusing......
