A tip for you:

When I don't know anything about an area mentioned I Google " genuki 'placename' " and often you get a good description about the place.

To use South Stoneham as an example:

well i cant find thomas on the 1881 census he probably has changed his occupation !!! i have sent off for what i think might be mary janes birth cert so fingers crossed that will help me. thanks to everyone who helped it is much appreciated

There are no marriages on freebmd transcipts on Ancestry for a Thomas Robert Day anywhere in England before 1903.

Have you tried to locate her father in 1881? You can search by occupation on Ancestry...........

If you could find him you'd know his birth year and birthplace, which may help with searches in earlier censuses.
