Tom/Thomas was born 1856 in Bridgewater Somerset. His parents were Mary Ann and William Chorley. I have his birth cert.

I thought I had found his marriage in 1875 to someone called Eliza so I sent for the cert. It has come back wrong.

upto 1871 he was living with his parents in Bridgewater..

1881 I have him possibly in London (although it does say he was born in Bristol).

Thomas CHORLEY Head M Male 25 Bristol, Somerset, England Baker Journeyman
Eliza CHORLEY Wife M Female 33 Bristol, Somerset, England
Thomas CHORLEY Son Male 5 Bristol, Somerset, England
Frederick CHORLEY Son Male 3 Marylebone, Middlesex, England
Albert CHORLEY Son Male 1 Birmingham, Warwick, England

But I also have this 1881 census.

James CHORLEY Head W Male 53 Wellington, Somerset, England Wool Carder (Stuff Mr)
Tom CHORLEY Son M Male 27 Wellington, Somerset, England Card Machine Cleaner
James CHORLEY Son U Male 21 Wellington, Somerset, England Card Machine Cleaner
Sophia Webber CHORLEY Daur U Female 18 Wellington, Somerset, England Card Machine Cleaner
Walter CHORLEY Son Male 16 Wellington, Somerset, England Worsted Spinner
Edward CHORLEY Son Male 14 Wellington, Somerset, England Worsted Spinner
Eliza CHORLEY Daur In Law Female 28 Wellington, Somerset, England Home Duties (Dom)
James Willie CHORLEY Grand Son Male 5 Wellington, Somerset, England Scholar
Sarah Ellen CHORLEY Grand Daur Female 2 Bradford, York, England
Betsy Ann CHORLEY Grand Daur Female 5 m Bradford, York, England

The problem with the marriage cert is this. It says his father was James but I know it should be William. This suggests that The marriage cert I have belongs to the Tom living with James. NOt mine. So now i have to find another Tom/Thomas Chorley who married an Eliza/Elizabeth. I have looked on FreeBMD and can't find them. Will someone please have a look for me. Thanks

Is one of these the cert you have? There are two Elizas there - the other one could be yours.

Marriages Mar 1875 (>99%)
CARP Eliza Wellington, Som. 5c 472
CHORLEY Thomas Wellington, Som. 5c 472
DIAMOND Eliza Wellington, Som. 5c 472
HARDING Henry Wellington, Som. 5c 472

You could order the cert giving father's name as a checking point and if it is the wrong cert you won't be charged the full £7.

Thanks Potty

Yes thats the one I sent for. It came back Thomas Chorley and Eliza Diamond. This means that Henry Harding married Eliza Carp.

I thought I had put the fathers name for reference but it seems i forgot.

Thanks for helping me

Could this be young Alberts birth?

It could be. I think that i will have to send for it and see what it says his mothers maiden name was. If I still cant find the marriage. Perhaps they were living in sin.

It appears that some of the children's names and ages were wrong on the census. That Thomas (the son) born in Bristol on the 1881 census appears as John on the 1891 cenus. The only birth I could find for him was a Thomas James Chorley. So I'm not sure just what is correct on the census. I wonder if she is laughing in her grave.

HI Jim

Thanks for that my family are the last one. William and Ann. Her real name was Mary Ann Hayward.

Thanks

Hi Jane
I was just showing that the census found later may not be him.

Thanks Jim. Looks like I will have to put him back on the lost file again.

I thought I had found him at last. The reason I thought it could be him was that two of his brothers moved to Aston in Birmingham. The census showed Thomas and Eliza as having a child in Birmingham. It must just be a co-incidence.

Thanks again
