My Bonds were from Gravesend late 1700s to first half of 1800s. But they were baptised at St.Georges mostly, but some at St.Peter & St.Paul in Milton by Gravesend.

Sorry, I'm no help I just was excited to see your post lol.

HMS Ganges was a training ship so he would have been in England at the time. If you google you should find pictures. I have found records of the ship in a couple of old naval books. It's one of the very old types of ships - fascinating to think they spent time on it!

My grandfather was on that one. If you can't find photos send me a pm (mention Ganges otherwise I'll forget what it's about- and include your e-mail) and I'll take some photos of the pictures I've got.

I can't find them on the 1891 census but on the 1901 census James gives his age as 45 which would mean he was born 1855/1856 and not 1860.

Men didn't always give their correct age when joining the forces.

UPDATE - sorry just realised that Jill has posted the 1891 census details.

James is a gen lab. And on this one it says he was born in Bristol. Also says oldest boy Walter was born in Gloucester - 1901 says Walter was born in Cornwall.

What was James' wife's name and have you found them in 1891?

Looking at the 1901 image for Isabella - her age might be 34. Ancestry reckon it's 36 - which it might be. An 1867 birth might be right for her ...

Year of Registration: 1859
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Gravesend (1837-1941)
County: Kent
Volume: 2a

If he was born in Gravesend - and baptised there - you might find his baptism record online at Medway's site Cityark. Once you get used to searching on the site it's reatively straightforward and would save you £7 for a certificate.

In the 1881 (in the navy ),and 1901 (Gloucester )census claims to be born St Pauls Gravesend Kent

but born 1857 on his marriage ( father John a miller ) certificate in 1883,

then born 1862 on his death certificate.
