There is a marriage on Free BMD of Levi Callear and Esther Corbett, 1868, Dudley, Worcs. That matches the widower on the 71 census with a father John Corbeth (the writing was bad and could have been Corbett).
Then there's a death of Esther Callear 1869, Wolverhampton, age 21.
That marriage from BVRI is really confusing the issue. Another Levi Callear with a father Alphonso! Can't be!

Oh dear!!!

I wouldn't have thought there would have been that many Levi Callears knocking about back then!!

I take it that the 1873 Marriage to Rachel Lewis is our Rachel?

Katex

Thanks for still looking.

Sorry, Kate, if I confused you before, I'm really confusing you now!
Yes, it's Levi Sr. I've been talking about.

Oh dear! Now I'm really confused!
There's a Levi Callear on the 1871 census and he's a widower. I thought "Wow, I've got him!" but it's all wrong. He's only 23 which matches the 51 census but the guy who got married in 1856 was 35.
The widower in 1871 is living with father-in-law, John Corbeth.
Back to square one!

I'm thinking that Levi was married twice. I found this marriage on BVRI and his father's name is Alphonso. (There can't be too many of those around!)
Then on Free BMD there's a marriage to Rachel Lewis in 1873,
I'll go and look at the 71 census.

CALLEAR, Levi Age: 35 Marriage
Wife: Emma LANGLEY Age: 35
Marriage Date: 4 Mar 1856 Recorded in: Stafford, Staffordshire, England

Husband's Father: Alphonso CALLEAR

This one has been mistranscribed as Collver but someone has corrected it, so someone is working on the family.

They wouldn't have been born yet for the 41 census. Also, do we know Rachel's maiden name?
I'll go and have a look at the 51 census.

Hi Margaret,

I don't I'm afraid. I had a look on Family Search but there were a few. She had a brother called William so narrowed it down to a couple.

Think only way to tell is to order there Marriage Certificate.

Gonna be cheeky now but could you have a look on 1841 for Rachael and Levi with their parents please.

Thanks.

I had already looked for Alice but there are so many Alice Westwoods that I can't tell which one is her. You don't know where she was born, do you?

Kate

Kate Report 13 Jan 2008 13:43

Hi Margaret,

Thank you very much.

It could indeed be a child of Levi Jr as their 1st child was born in 1903.

MargaretM Report 13 Jan 2008 13:33

Found the death of Levi Sr, 1897 in Pontrefact, age 50.
There's also a death of Levi in 1902, age 0. A son of Levi Jr?

MargaretM Report 13 Jan 2008 13:28

Kate, I can't find any of the Callear family in 1901! I've even tried first names and birthplaces only. I wondered if Levi Sr. had died and Rachel re-married but no, I found her death in 1914 as Rachel Callear in Pontrefact, aged 66.
