Can anyone advise where I look for a death of a RM

If someone was in the Royal Marines and died in 1880/1 while serving where would the death be recorded?

If anyone knows I would really appreciate it

First check the usual GRO death indices for England and Wales. Hopefully he has an unusual name which will help to track him down if he died in a different area of the country than you would expect.

If he isn't in the above index then he may have died overseas or at sea so you can then check
the GRO overseas indexes. These can be searched for free, after registration, at

Another thought....

Have you had a look on the National Archives site, Registers of Royal Naval Seamen, to see if his service record is there? If it is you can download it for £3.50.

If you click on the title 'Royal Naval Seamen' in the box part way down the page it explains what they have. If you click on search you won't get the explanation first.
