I have a female relative whose first name I cannot read on the 61 census and who has a much longer name Margaret on the 71 census. Her age is different by several years. How can I check on her birth she is shown on both 61 and 71 census as born in Egypt and being a british subject. Any suggestions as to where I can look. I am really puzzled about why the family were in Egypt c. late 1850s and also her father who was an engine driver also seems to disappear from the census at the same time as she appears. Could he be still in Egypt? why was he there in the first place.? Thanks Chris.

Can you share the name and the source reference so we can look at it?

Her father could have been in the military - families did travel with their men.

Findmypast has overseas BMDs and Military BMD.

.Hi, 1861 censu for Darlington aged 2 with her mother Margaret listed as head and 5 other siblings. at 38 Green Street Darlington. Ten years later she is at the home of her grandparents in Darlington but appears only to be 8, Her father on the 1851 census was described as engine driver. I don't think he was in the army.

British engineers and railroad workers were responsible for building and running many of the rail systems of the world.........so not too unlikely that the father would have been in Egypt...........

Sorry the name is Carlisle. Mothers name Margaret Carlisle for 1861 and the grandfather in 1871 is Thomas Carlisle.

I can't see these people in 1871....where are they living?

Are their names mistranscribed?

Thanks , yes apart from not being able to read the name which you say is Jane I got the photocopy of page. I don't know why she is Margaret H by the next census when she is with her grandfather. I don't seem to be able to trace what happened to her father. Can you suggest any sources?

I'm not sure there is any connection between these people and the 1861 family

In 1861, the only child not born in Darlington is Jane...........and she already has a sister named Margaret........born c1850.

The only possiblility of a connection is if the first Margaret died, and Margaret H born c1863 was named in her memory.........

Thomas was grandfather to the family you saw on the 61 census. His son William is the disappeared engine driver. I cannot think that there would be another child born in Egypt and feel that they must be the same. Therefore I was wondering where her birth would be registered to check which one would be right. Also if a british subject died abroad I wanted to try to find out if William died abroad perhaps in Egypt.
