HELP NEEDED Miners- World War 1

Hi,

Could anyone help me ? , I need to know ,if during World War 1, it was the norm for miners not to have to go away to war.
I know that during World War 11 they where considered as a necessity to stay here and continue work down the mines, but can anyone clarify the position during the first World War.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I have found a few relatives that went away to war, even though their occupation was down as miner, just wanted to verify if they had to go or if they would have volunteered or been called up.

Nicholson's Official History of the Canadian Army in the First World War devotes part of Chapter 16 to Canada's Tunnelling Companies. Their work was integrated with that of their British and Australian counterparts, so the passages mostly apply to the Brits too. See:
