Paul,

If this has held up your research for years have you been unable to find the birth certificate? Because that's the obvious solution.

This is possibly George's birth (thsis district covers Roystone), getting the certificate will tell you his parents:

There is nothing on 1861 census to suggest that Betty is George's mother

Looking at the image, it looks to me like George is great grandson to Thomas Gunson, not the grandson.

What makes you so sure that Betty is his mother?

I'm trying to find the father of George Horner, born 1857. The1861 census shows him as the grandson to Thomas Gunson. His mother is Betty Cutts (born 1812) who is married to David Cutts (born 1787). Betty Cutts is the daughter of Thomas Gunson. Betty and David have 2 children called Alfred (born 1853) and Bessy Cutts (born1861). The 1871 census has Betty Cutts as the head of the house and George Horner as the Grandson. How can he be the grandson when Betty Cutts is his mother. In the 1881 census George is listed as a lodger and living with Bessy Cutts. My problem is how can I find out who George Horner's father is bearing in mind Betty Cutts is his mother. Could George be illagitamate and was given his father's Surname, or did Betty Gunson marry a Horner? This has held up my research for many years now so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
