How do I find someone in America?

I am trying to find a John Leo Sanders born around 1941 in London. At a young age he went to Canada and with his family, emigrated to America via New York in 1948 on a Canadian passport. His father was Leo William Sanders, 1910 and his mother was Gertrude Anna (Beer?) 1916. His father was an accountant and mother a dress designer.

I have tried all the US Sanders boards and have had no luck.

Is there any way of tracing this family?

If you go to

http://search.ancestry.com

and do a general search for John Leo Sanders born 1940 in England and died in the US, you get this:

Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905-1957
Immigration & Emigration

Name: John Leo Sanders
Birth Date: 10 Nov 1940
Birthplace: London
Birth Country: England

Port of Arrival: Detroit, Michigan

That would mean he entered from Canada.

(You can only see the birthdate by hovering your mouse over the link. I can't get any farther as I don't pay for US records.)

None of the other entries I see for John L Sanders matches up with the birthdate, apparently. Hopefully, someone here with access to US records will take a look for you. About the only record there might be is in the Social Security death index, if he has died.

You won't be able to get BMD information, because of privacy laws -- not as tight as in Canada and Australia, e.g., but nowhere near like in the UK.

No other suggestions, sorry! One can only imagine how many John Sanders-s there are in the US ... so the phone book just wouldn't be the place to start.

Thank you Katheryn
Now you have found his dob I think I will try to find his birth registration. This at least will give me his mother's maiden name and possibly more siblings. Maybe I can trace him through her line. I know the name of her mother but no marriage of a Sanders to a Beer in the UK so she was possibly a widow when she married Leo Sanders, although she was born in Vienna. Help!!!

Jackie, Kathryn found the correct record. Since he may still be alive, rather than share any personal information here, I will pm you with the information from the image. (Sorry, but I cannot send the image.)

Thanks, Lisa! Good idea about PMing ... I just think of stuff on Ancestry as dusty, but in this case you're right.

oops -- You're welcome, Jackie!
