What kind of info recorded in asylum records?

I would like to know more about my G3 grandmother's sojourn in the Devon County Asylum.

anyone got any idea of what asylums recorded in their books and whether this is searchable these days?

My great grandad was committed to an asylum in 1935 and died in there 17 days later. I got his records and they were well worth it.

They had an account of the events that led to him being committed, all his statistics like age, height, hair colour, even the number of teeth he had. Oh, and his medical history as well!

There was a list of his parents and siblings, details of his wife and children, his address, occupation, details of his childhood and even the schools he attended.

They made fantastic reading. The Records Office photocopied the relevant pages and posted them to me and charged me about £3.50. I wasn't able to look at the books myself in case I saw someone else's details.

I have her admission papers but she was there for almost forty years and I would like to know more about her and her stay.

This was 1867 to 1902 so I hope the details are as good. I will contact the Devon County Records office.
