Does anyone know where I may be able to find prison records for around 1850 for the Cambridgeshire County Gaol in Chesterton, Cambs and also what sort of things they may tell me?

I've found one of my ancestors there in the 1851 census and am interested what he did.

Thanks in advance.

You could give the Cambridgeshire Record Office a ring, see if they have any holdings. They have an online catalogue which brings up Gaol Calendars for 1850 ish, but they should be able to tell you if that is what you need.

County Record Office Cambridge
Box RES 1009
Shire Hall
Castle Hill
Cambridge
CB3 0AP

Tel: 01223 717281

Could always put his name/gaol into A2A and see if anything comes up for Cambridge Record Office.

Thanks Gail.

I've tried the second suggestion already, but will try the first.
