You can get it online from the GRO, but you will need the correct reference for it which you can find on the free bmd website. If you can't see it, ask for a look up from someone who has an Ancestry subscription, there are lots of us on the boards.
You can get it from the main Register Office in the area he was born as well, but they use different reference numbers.

Thanks Linda, all i need to know now is where do i get a copy from, does have to be from the area he was born in or can i go to any office for a copy?

If it is a small copy which looks like a torn out part from a small book, it is just the cheaper version which the could buy when the birth was registered. I have one of these from my father.If you buy the full one, it gives his birth address, fathers name and occupation, mothers maiden name and the address and name of the person registering the birth.

Hi everyone, i have an original copy of my great grandfathers birth certificate but all it tells me is his name, date of birth and the sub-district of St James, if i got another copy of it would it have more info on it like his parents and address?....... and, can i get a copy from my local registery office in Manchester or do i have to send off to london for one?
