Jill in East Kent and Potty kindly helped me yesterday (very quickly after I had been searching all day!) with a different census enquiry ... but I have another one now. I have been looking for the last 2 hours, using all the tips they gave me, and I still am no further forward. I wondered if any of you kind souls could help me?

I am looking for the 1841 census return for:

Head: Richard Gibbons, b. 1802 Deptford Kent
Son: Alfred Gibbons b 1828 Deptford Kent
Son: Richard Gibbons b 1831 Deptford, Kent

His wife could have been Elizabeth or Mary.

The above information is from the 1851 census. Richard was listed as a Ship Carpenter.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Joan

Thanks so much for looking.

It was actually because I saw this IGI entry that I was trying to find them in the 1841 census! In 1851 Richard is married to Mary but the grandly titled ALFRED LLOYD FOXWORTH GIBBONS has his mother listed as Elizabeth - and it would make sense of the gap in the children if Elizabeth died (or whatever) and Richard remarried Mary.

All very difficult this, isn't it ;-)

I have to say, if this Alfred is mine, he's the grandest titled replative I have (the others are all plain old George and Alfred's!)

Thanks again... Your time and grey matter is very much appreciated.

What about this family; Richard is a shipwright - not too different to ship's carpenter. All born out of county and I notice Hannah in the 1851 was born Wapping - not too far from Rotherhithe. I also wonder if the Martha Wright in 1851 could be Mary's daughter from a previous marriage?

Potty

Once again, thank you. You are great at this!

Any idea where Joan's message went? It has come up that it has been deleted.

Thanks again ...

Hi Potty

I just reread what you put about Martha Wright. Martha married Alfred in 1852, so I guess was "living in sin" beforehand. Another family story to investigate but refreshingly one that isn't a complete mystery!
