Hi Leah,
1881 census gives Lowinger Maddison and his 2 brothers and 3 sisters living with his parents at Low Brown Houses, Stanhope, Northumberland. His father was also Lowinger born in 1838 at Allendale, Northumberland and his mother was Elizabeth, born in Allendale also. Her maiden name may have been Thirlwell. Lowinger junior was born in Hexham, Northumberland. He was given as aged 4 in this census.
The 1891 census for Lower Cuthbert Street, Gateshead, Durham shows that Elizabeth, Lowinger's mother was aged 46 and a widow. Lowinger senior must have died during those 10 years.
Lowinger, junior, was then given as 15 and had his 3 sisters and 3 brothers living with him. Frederick H Maddison was aged 4.
If you need a more detailed account of the census, please don't hesitate to get in touch. My typing is a bit slow so it may take awhile.
Best wishes, Fred Wright.

There's a Lowinger Maddison on the Ellis Island site. He was working on the ship Orontes which arrived at New York 24 July 1918 from Sidney. He was an officer's servant, 44 years old, making him born abt. 1874.
He was also a steward on the Adriatic, sailing from Liverpool to New York, Oct. 1918
