Hi, I recently got a birth certificate for my grandfather. Under his father's occupation it says 'Groom, not domestic', what does this mean? Thanks.

I would suspect that he was a groom at a stables or somewhere like that.

Oh, I found one of these this week and I guess that he was a groom of horses doing a mailrun or "bus" between towns, rather than attached to a private house.

I have a similar thing with someone described as "Gardener not domestic" - I think it does mean they were employed somewhere that wasn't a private house. (Perhaps they were what we would call self employed today and went to the homes of others to do gardening.)

Hi, I suggested him doing a mailrun between towns cos I found my gg dad living in Sheffield on one census and in Nottingham as a visitor the next, and he married a girl from Chesterfield (which is in between). It just suggested to me that he travelled as part of his job.
