Does anyone know if Ginny is a name in its own right, or an abreviation for something?

Thank you
Dee

My mum had an aunt by marriage called "Gin" but had no idea what her real name was. After much digging, I discovered that the aunt was really Elizabeth Jane, who was known as "Jennie" as a little girl (judging my the 1901 census), which must have turned into "Ginnie" (the name one of my mum's cousins knew the woman as) which then got shortened to "Gin".

My mother was Jeanette - but always called Ginny by her family. I thought maybe it was the Somerset accent that made Jenny sound like Ginny.
