I just had a look at the Dictionary of the Scottish Language and think it's a useful reference work.

Do google for the Dictionary of the Scottish Language and put in "scandal". A 1708 definition is given, but all the entries there are a delight!

I don't know but doesn't it sound juicy!

They used to be quite strict up there I think but I know if you had a bit of money you could hush things up - what changes?

I was reading that people could be fined for pre marital sex even when they were engaged to be married - nice little earner for the priests!

But the most dreadful thing was that an elder from a nearby church court was allowed not to appear in front of another area's church court by sending £5 to make up for his lapse in behaviour if this behaviour would not be advertised around!!!!!

can anyone help me find out what a Process of Scandal is .I came upon it in reference to one of my ancestors He was called Patrick Cowan from Edinburgh in Scotland He was a burgess and it mentioned that he was in involved in a Process of Scandal with another person through the commissary courts in Scotland in 1703 Any help would be great regards Sandra
