Confused Newbie !!!

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Jean Report 26 Jan 2008 16:13

I am an "Oldie Newbie" !! and get confused easily.

I am trying to tie my GGrandfather,George Briant/Bryant to a family before the 1841 census.I think he was born in Tandridge,Surrey.

On the 1841 census he was living on a farm in Limpsfield,Surrey, 15yrs of age.
I have his marriage cert stating he married Beatrice Harbert,Aug 10 1851 in Hackney Middlesex.and can follow him from there.

I have looked at every George on the Surrey IGI until I was cross eyed with a raging headache !!!
I don't want to assume a family until I am sure.

As I live in Canada I have to rely on the computer (which I am also new at-two strikes against !!!!)

All help appreciated.

The marriage cert should have the name and occupation of George's father.......

Curious Fox has someone researching the same family although the post is from 2006...Was it you?

They have him born Limpsfield 1824 and his father being a George too.

I don't know if I am doing this right and replying to all at the same time ???
Thankyou for taking the time to answer.

Chris,Yes the posting on Curiousfox is me, I started in Nov 2006 and gave up as I thought it was all beyond me,but giving it another try !!

Jim,Yes I have the info of the census you mention. It is the Father and Siblings before 1841 I am trying to find.

Reg, See the posting from Jim re census records.
The marriage cert states Father's name as George Briant, labourer.

When George married Beatrice, who were the witnesses?
Maybe the names will help identify George's family.

Hi Joan,
I had found the family you mention but want to be sure before going off on the wrong track.
I will post on the Records office board as you suggest.
Thankyou for replying,
Jean.

Hi Gwyn,

I checked the witnesses on George/Beatrice wedding cert. They are Beatrice sister and her husband, no-one on Georges side.
All replies give me ideas where I should be looking.
Thankyou
Jean.

Jean

Just a though have you looked on the IGI to see if they have a film for your area of interest. If they have it and you have Family History centres near you hire it and possible look at the transcripe or the actual church records. good luck

Good luck.

Hi Jean
I have not been myself but my wife used to before the net.
Find the address of your nearest centre. My wife used to phone to make an appointment then visit to place an order.
From the catalogue:-

Bishop's transcripts for Tandrige, 1800-1861 Church of England. Parish Church of Tandridge (Surrey)
Tandridge, Surrey : baptisms, 1666-1840; burials, 1695-1840 Webb, Cliff (Clifford R.) England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Cemeteries
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Census
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Census - 1851 - Indexes
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Church records
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Church records - Indexes
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Manors - Court records
England, Surrey, Limpsfield - Poorhouses, poor law, etc.

Anywhere in the world,I think.

Jean,

The films of the records are supposed to be available anywhere in the world, as long as the local LDS office is willing to carry them

I have discovered that the Vancouver office does NOT apparently do so!

To find out where the offices are, go to the website, and on the first search page (???Home Page), scroll down. You should see a heading Find A Family History Center Near Your home.

Your nearest one would appear to be:
Vancouver British Columbia
5280 Kincaid St
Burnaby, Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Phone: 604-299-8656
Hours: T-Th 10am-9pm; F-Sat 10am-2pm

They don't carry them - normally you order them and pay the cost of postage - then view them at the centre.

Thankyou Jim and Sylvia for your info.

I am so excited, I have found there is a LDS centre only 15min drive from me,never knew there was all this available. I have had a quick look at the Limpsfield transcripts and will take copies for my visit to the centre.

Everyone has been so helpful today and I have learned a lot. All help is appreciated.
Thanks, Jean.
