How to find a name of a ship?

Hi Joan, yes they had two witnesses. They were Thomas Ramage and William Dixon.

William Dixon had been signed lots of marrigage registers as a witness. Thomas Ramage could be a father or a brother of Robert Ramage.

I would suggest first having a look at the TNA research guides for Marines if you haven't already done so.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1

Click on 'R' in the 'Jump To' line for Royal Marines.

It looks as if you will be able to find info, if available, without the name of the ship but it may take some work.

Were the names of the witnesses given on the marriage register?

Hi Joan, unfortunately, there is no Robert, Ann or Mary in 1841 census. Also nothing to find Robert and Ann in 1851 onwards. It is mystery!

I have another ancestor who was also was in a royal navy and it was successful to find him easily.

Recently I finally received a copy of a marriage register of Northumberland from a person.

It was Robert Ramage and Ann Grice who were married in 1824. However, there is no information about his occupation.

I have only one child (I think) Mary Ramage's baptism register in 1828 that his occupation was a marine. Also I have her marriage certificate in 1847 that her father's occupation was a sailor. It is not tell if he was deceased or not.

I understand that National Archives in Kew will need to get a name of a ship to look up some information of Robert Ramage around 1820s to 1840s.

But how do I find out what a name of a ship he was in?
