I've got a Joseph Knowles( abt. 1845) on the 1871 census piece 3782 folio 63 page 22. birth place looks like St Weller's louthen.
Anyone know where this is or am i reading it wrongly.

Hi James

I'm stumped! It's been transcribed as St Wellers Louthen on Ancestry, and I looked at the image too. Even though it's quite faint, it does look like St Wellers Louthen to me.

Hoping someone else will have a better pair of eyes, but I'll keep searching.

I'm trying to compare the enumerator's "S"s but he's not very consistent, so the last word could actually be Southern.

Have you found him on 1861?

I put St Hellers Louthen into Google and someone's tree came up: Family Tree of David John Foster whith the name Joseph Knowles in it. He also thinks it is St Hellers Louthan with a big ???at the side.

So he doesn't know where it is either!

Thanks everybody,

Michael I only found him because my interest was in the Singletons. I haven't looked elsewhere for him yet

Could it be St. Helens (perhaps spelt as St. Hellens)? And the second word could be Southern or something.

Apologies, only I don't know the area all that well.

I hope this helps anyway.

Thanks Ellie,
I'll probably put it down as St Helens Southern.
Looking at the birthplaces on the 1871 census this family went everywhere

Once again thanks all of you.
