Julie, I know very little about autism, other than what I have read including a book called For the Love of Ann.

I do hope that you manage to get an appointment with the doctor that you want and that Alex and you receive the help that you need. He is more than half way there by having you as his loving Mum!

Another ( hug ) for you.

Hi Gillie

I have to agree with you about the DSS.

I've been lucky in that Alex has always had help. When younger he did have speech problems and received the help he needed with that. I'm just glad this has come to light now when it's not too late to do anything.

Yes and fight, fight, fight for that allowance!

Hi Linda :-)

That's what's so lovely about this site. There's always someone who's willing to listen and usually someone who can help using their own experience.

Julie, I am so sorry your Alex has been misdiagnosed all these years, I hope you can get things sorted out and the help he now needs.
As for the DSS, they are quick to stop monies if they think you owe them, but if its them owing you they aren't so quick to sort things out.

Good Luck and try not to worry, I know it's easily said.

Take Care.

Thank you, Ann. I have to admit I've been lucky compared to some, Alex has always had help in place. I just need to get his statement altered so he gets the right help in the future.

So sorry to read this Julie but I know others on here with experience of the condition will support and help you.

In the meantime take pride in the wonderful job you have done so far.

Love and hugs.

I'll do that but will wait until he has an official diagnosis so I have some idea of where he is on the spectrum.

Kitty I totally agree with, he is my son and I'll always love him. As for the carers allowance I may not lose it yet. If I do then I'll go and see someone who can advise me as to the best course of action. I won't give up without a fight.

Thanks to you all :-)

Gail my kids are not angels but I don't have people coming to my house saying they've done such and such either.

Liz you're right the label doesn't really matter. We just need a proper diagnosis so Alex can get the help that he needs. It just came as a bit of a shock.

Jean yes it is a wonderful school and his teachers are lovely, they've helped him so much.

Tina I have to admit most of the doctors in my practice are okay but a couple of them have not been there long so I don't really know them. This doctor has been with the practice years and always listens.

Your son is still your son....................no matter what label the experts give him.

As for the carers allowance issue..............could you claim attendance allowance instead?

This can be used to pay others for childcare etc.

Gosh - I managed to read it all and what a time of it you have had. I hope it is all sorted out very soon. There are some really nice GP's out there - not many but there are. Hope he can provide the support you require.

I am so sorry Julie that you have to face this.

I don't know much about your son's condition but it sounds as if he is attending a wonderful school with specialised teachers..

Perhaps when you have a full understanding of what you and your son have to face things will seem more positive.

Julie, if your son has got through these early years with the help of the schools and yourself etc, and has been relatively happy and fulfilled, then it doesn't really matter that his 'label' has changed, as long as you get more information from the gp and then whatever help he needs now. I think there are several people on the boards with children who have varying degrees of Autism/Aspergers and they will be able to help you too, once the diagnosis is ascertained. You sound as tho you have been the best Mum Alex could have chosen and I hope you will both continue to be able to do what you want with life. Lots of luck with your college course and I hope you get the Carer's Allowance reinstated soon. As if you need that stress now, but always the way, things get chucked at us at the worst time.
Don't stress yourself too much, wait till you see the good gp and take things from there. You know there is always someone about here for you to offload, so (((hugs ))) for you and your lad, and good luck.

I looked after a little autistic Spanish boy a few years ago, both parents were doctors but were in denial, he had the added difficulty of them only speaking to him in Spanish and expecting him to cope with English outside the home, he was 3 but looked older as he was tall, so big expectations all around him. I was sad when they moved to another hospital in a different city to work, as he was doing well with me and at the nursery I had to take him to sometimes, and I know the move upset him.
I often wonder how he is doing now, bless him, he must be in his teens.
