Well being greedy I have three different types of cancer:)

I also have a daughter with spinal cancer so believe me when I say the most important thing to me is to find a cure for this terrible disease....but if it took genetic engineering to
do that I would say no thanks.

The trouble with science is that men control it until it controls them and there is always someone who will take that extra risk in the 'name of science'.

Here,here-we would be nowhere without hope & sometimes that hope comes in a form that scares us but its preferable to being pumped full of chemicals-aka synthetic genetics

that is very honest of you sue

i have not been in that position myself this far, thank goodness.

I do think that everyones own ethics are their own personal choice though and what one person chooses is not necessarily better or worse than another persons choice....just different

Sue Report 13 May 2008 19:17

Well I was against it until my daughter was diagnosed. When you have a personal interest in the possibility of a cure being found your ethics usually are open to compromise.

oh Dizzi...interrupt away, it is good to get views form all sorts of people in different situations

thats how we learn new things

No need to apologise Dizzy...........I hope so very much that medical science can come up with something that helps your situation and others.

Not all science is bad.

it would be fair to say that i cannot appreciate how you feel Dizzi but to say no one can is not true as i am sure there are many people in the same position as yourself

i agree with amanda whole heartedly

With respect Dizzy.........stem cell research and Genetic Engineering arn't in the same category .

Genetic engineering is more about mixing up the DNA of things that couldn't possibly get mixed with out the interference of science.

It scares me to the core.........fidderling with the very fabric of life can only end in tears........I believe.

I'm more against genetic engineering than for it. I appreciate the argument about curing disease and illness and providing a better way of life for people in general. I don't see religion as a factor. For those who are religious, God gave us brains and skills and choices about how we develop them.

I'm very concerned about how far it will go in terms of people being able to make pre birth choices about their children and think we are meant to be imperfect.

However, I would be willing to accept almost anything that would cure the illnesses of those I care for who are currently suffering so I guess my ethics would fly out of the window....

Yes, but then we would all be buying weetabix by the binliner full.....and one poor harvest and we'd all be pretty hungry, let me tell you!

And if we weren't meant to eat animals, why are they made of meat?

i also believe in natures way and a comment on "what happens when disease kills out crops and scientist re introduce foreign DNA into a crop to make it resilient against the disease so we don't run out of cereal foods"

Despite the rich diversity of foods found all over the world, one third of its population does not have enough to eat.

People go hungry because much of arable land is used to grow feed grain for animals rather than people.

Currently farmed animals eat one-third of the world’s cereal production. In the industrialised world, two-thirds of the agricultural land produces cereals for animal feed.

If the cereal and crops were produced for direct human consumption and not to feed animals to be slaughtered and eaten the chances of there not being enough cereal foods would be so minimal the need for genetiacally engineered alternatives would not be necessary

*here ends the party political broadcast on behalf of the vegan society* lol sorry about that...started typing and couldn't stop haha

I believe in natures way.
I think we have interfered too much, and caused so many problems, with nature and humans.
If an animal is weak, it dies. That is natures way, and how animals evolve.
We never seem to learn by our mistakes.

GENETIC ENGINEERING
has been around us all our live i.e human/animal natural selection /cross breeding /interrace relations the natural way.
The problem to me is when the human being interfeirs.
People ask is it a good or bad thing to create a genetically engineered organism You could say what happens when disease kills out crops and scientist re introduce foriegn DNA into a crop to make it resilient against the desease so we dont run out of ceral foods. Shoud we take DNA from one sorce and intoduce it into anther to create bigger cows so we can have more hambergers.
Do we really want to mess with this genetically engineered DNA
who knows where it will leed too.
A new bread of human with some common sence.
