Berona Report 22 Jan 2010 22:22

I'm back! After worrying for the past few days about walking from the carpark to the pathology rooms in 40 degree heat, daughter had ideas of double-parking to drop me off, but just as we came up to the building, a car pulled out and she was able to park right in front of their door! Couldn't believe our luck!...Well, I'm back now, minus my precious blood. The air conditioner is on and I'm about to give the pots a drink, then hibernate! The forecast is for 44 and wind (not good for bush fires!).

Welcome back, Berona.

It sounds like you just got home in time before the really hot weather sets in

Hello All

Haven't read the thread so will catch up later - as it takes so long and then you have all disappeared.
OH went for a ride on our Auckland suburban lines yesterday for the first time using his free Gold card - and he said it's great, he had got to look at the back of people's houses saw theire garden sheds etc and noticed which ones were illegal. I had told him that you get to see places you would not normally do when you go by rail. He has come home with ideas on how to do the back yard now.

Perse.

Hi Berona - well that's done so now you just have to wait for the results. It's going to be a stinker here too so I'm getting a few things done and then I'll hibernate for the day. It's overcast which makes the weather very oppressive and also windy - just luverley:-))

Persey - that could be a good or a bad thing. Not rail travel - getting ideas by looking at other people's yards:-)))

Yes, it's warming up outside, although there is some cloud and that helps to keep the heat down. However, the day is young yet! Just a few more pots to do with the watering can. Had to get my hosing done before the 10am curfew! We can hose again after 4pm, but it's too hot to be out in it by then.

Hi Persey

Sue, we get our ideas from visiting show homes and then adapting them to our circumstances.

We work on the basis that their gardens will be low maintenance, but still need to look nice.

We have now settled on our main theme at the back which is to extend the rose-bed, and then have an area of Cordylines with contrasting foliage. Also two feature areas of agapanthus with a tall dark one in the middle of each area and then six smaller white ones around each perimeter. We will also put a couple of frangipanis in which OH has grown form cuttings.

We will still retain the vegie area but also put in a couple of grape vines a passion fruit.

That sounds lovely Allan - we must have photos when you're finished and then an invite to the Opening Gala Day. I think we talked about a bbq before but as you and your OH has put so much work into it I think it is deserving of a much bigger celebration.

That sounds nice, Allan. The previous owner of my dtr's home had a wonderful gift for garden design and they have a small garden at the base of their front steps devoted entirely to agapanthus. It's always green and at Christmas time, it bursts into colour - and requires no maintenance other than thinning out every few years.

Hello Tec. Hope all is well with you?

Allan Report 22 Jan 2010 23:06

Sue, I will get some photes when I learn how to change the setting on my camera to give me smaller size that I can email.

The ones I took in Freo, when downloade were all about 8 mb, far to large for general work, and I've had a problem previously when I scanned some of my grandfather's sketches to send to Canada. Anything over 2 mb gives my puter a nervous breakdown

I'm fine thank you Berona, So you made it to the blood test - hope you didn't give them too much and have to do an Anthony Hancock.

Allan, Should I be invited to your Opening Garden Gala Day, I would be happy to run the bar in the gazebo

Berona, We have had the standard blue agapanthus for a few years which is why we know that they require very little maintenance.

We split some a couple of years ago to put in our front garden, and even though we only have blue, one came up white!

The ones at the back we have purchase as white. The central flowers are very dark, almost deep purple in colour.

Hello Allan -
They are trying to stop people growing agapanthus here - been declared a weed and people are asked to control it or remove it. Mind you it is still everywhere.

Hello Tec
Loved Hancock's sketch on giving blood. That was quite an offer you have made Allan - running the bar in the gazebo - but at least it will be a well sheltered spot in that heat.

Hello Berona
Hope everyhing is okay with you and your blood is of the finest quality.

Hello Sue
Yes - I am wondering what he will come up with next. You should see all the though that is going into our stereo system - he is tweaking it so to speak - all because we need a new turntable (he dropped something on the old one) for our oh so many vinyl records.

I see Diane and Linda were around but before I came on so hi to them as well.

Persey

Hi PERSE,
I was a big fan of Hancock's Half Hour, and could watch them again. Actually they are available on DVD, I might be tempted one of the days.

I took a stack of books to the charity shop today. On the way out I spotted among the CDs four compilation albumns, each containing 3 CDs,
Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and one with the music and songs of Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter.
So 12 CDs cost me £10 - and all my kind of music
