Yes I had the chloroform Persey. I think I would've been about 5. These days they dont take tonsils out unless they really need to.

I also remember being knocked over by a boy on a bike. I remember lying on the ground looking up at my mum. I could hear someone crying and when I asked who it was I was told that the "naughty" boy who had knocked me down was crying because my dad had given him a good telling off and was then taking him to his parents to tell them what he'd done.

Oh dear that sounds awful Perse. Sometimes even today you hear of people who are aware of everything during an operation but can't move to tell anyone.

The enema wasn't before the operation, it was a few days afterwards, on a Sunday afternoon, isn't it funny what you remember.

The worst medical thing was the awful smell of the rubber mask as they put you to sleep to have teeth out YUK!

Berona Report 23 Jan 2010 22:40

I had my tonsils out on my second trip to hospital. Had my 4th birthday whilst there. My memory of that is this wad of stinky stuff clamped over my nose, then as I objected, they must have been holding my legs in place, but I felt that they were sitting on my legs! I have spoken of this over the years, and I always say that I woke up vomiting and my Aunty Florrie was holding the dish under my chin. My mum always corrected me and said "it wasn't Florrie, it was me!" but even to-day, my memory is of the aunt. I have to say, they WERE very similar in looks.

Why did you want a collection of cats Tec? Was their a rat problem?

And I thought I was always up to mischief.

Allan

Allan Report 23 Jan 2010 22:45

Tec, that just triggered another memory, but not of cats!

When I was about five or six, my Uncle, who at that stage was still single, was living with us. He worked at the Post Office and travelled ther by bike.

We could always tell when he was nearly home. He used to come down the back Entry, and without fail one of the neighbours dogs would chase after him and we would rush out to see this spectacle of the dog yapping at my Uncle's leg while he was trying to kick the dog and still retain control of the bike.

Funnily enough, it was only my Uncle that the dog would go for. Kids could ride up and down the entry on bikes to their hearts'content with nary a problem

When I worked at Auckland Hospital (in their Post Office) - the charge nurse on the ENT ward used to have tonsil weekends. She used to get about 10 kids in that were due to have tonsils out and lay mattresses around the day room floor and they would all recover together - play games and swap stories and have a picnic afterwards. It used to work wonders for the kids and the nurses had them all in together and would have a whale of a time.

Half a dozen 10 year old, bored to death on the summer holidays,
seemed to be a good wheeze at the time as there were lots of cats about

Berona Report 23 Jan 2010 23:04

Following on those early ear operations, I have very vivid recollections of my mum saying "don't get your ears wet!", so because of this, I never learned to swim - so just don't get any ideas of throwing me over the side when we go on this cruise...please!!!!!

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 23 Jan 2010 23:05

Oh you silly billy, Berona. I just asked the question about what we can get up to on our cruise. You've just put thoughts in our minds:-)))

I think that throwing you over the side will be a bit too drastic. Our liner will of course have one of those state of the art pools which has the current you can swim against. I will get you a bowl of water so you can sit and soak your frrt. Will that do?

Tecwyn Report 23 Jan 2010 23:09

Sue............
As I collected up all the cats - we could collect up all the ships officers, lock them in a cabin, and take over the ship.
Go where we liked, for as long as we liked, 'till the food ran out

Who would be Captain - I reckon Berona would make a good Skipper

Tecwyn Report 23 Jan 2010 23:21

Perse the Purser......Ilike it.

You can sit at the Captains table Linda - you will be expected to make a grand entrance into the First Class dining room every night for dinner - looking stunning - and dripping in diamonds

Heads will turn - jaws will drop.........

You have to look regal as you taught at that finishing school - get practicing
