It is hard to know - Tec.

I asked one guy who had heaps of info on a website - and it said please ask before copying. No reply - so left it alone - I would look but not touch for awhile until it got to me - so I e-mailed him again - no reply. So heave ho and up she rises I copied the lot and e-mailed him and told him. About a year later he got in contact with me and didn't mind at all - he had forgotten all about it and was not using that e-mail address anymore and just by chance checked it. But even when I did copy - I went through every avenue I could to verify details.

Good Morning Perse,
The men in white coats come for me regularly, but always go away, as they consider me beyond help or therapy.

Good Morning Allan - That does seem a good idea. I assume he can see my tree, as I can see his, so there would be no doubt we are researching the same family

There you all are:-))

Tec - I feel it's good etiquette to ask before you copy information. It's easy to send a message although don't expect an answer immediately. If I don't get an answer within a few weeks I usually just copy the info. One line of my family regularly put photos up on their tree and after me asking several times if they minded me copying photos they sent a message saying I was welcome to copy anything I wanted. As this person is extremely conscientious about checking their info. I trust their tree. Just be careful what you copy.

Berona - it's funny that you didn't have the storms. We did. With loud thunder and rain. For those that don't know Berona and I live about 1 1/2 hours apart and yet we get varying weather.

I can get varying weather all day here.... it is absolutely beautiful out today but metereological report talks about thunderstorms etc. Never believe everything you hear. I just love it when they tell us what is going to happen a week ahead on the TV and very little of it does.

Perse the sceptic.

Good Morning Sue,

I think I will contact this person and see what kind of response I get, if any. Going by the information that tallys with my own, I would think he is fairly correct with his entries.
He also has photo's that I haven't, and I also have photo's that he hasn't - though I've yet to learn how to put them on Ancestry.

Can the Duchess or you see family likenesses in these photos of his Tec?

And I better add good morning all as well.

My OH is going to listen to the next interview on the radio this morning - discussion with a behavioural psychologist about dealing with an only child. (I am one)

Persey - if your OH doesn't know how to deal with an only child - i.e. you - by now he never will:-)) Do you really want him to learn how you tick? You need to keep him on his toes:-))

Yes, Persey, Sue is right : stand tall and keep him on his toes!

Tecwyn Report 27 Jan 2010 22:36

Perse - OH only knew her grandmother on that side of her family, and the photo's that chap has on Ancestry are of Victorian men, so hard to know of any similarity.

Doesn't your OH know how to deal with you yet?

Berona

Berona Report 27 Jan 2010 22:36

Tec - Whilst I feel that it is common courtesy to ask before copying, he has, nevertheless, put his tree on the open internet for all to see and copy as they wish, so I really don't think it would be necessary to ask permission in this case.
I would be inclined to copy whatever I required - but I wouldn't accept it as official and I would check it out for myself. Some people are happy to settle for family legends passed down - and even guesswork - or they find one record with the right name on it - and accept it without checking it out.

Sue - we had a few heavy drops around 5pm, and when I looked out a few minutes later, everything was dry again. That was it!

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 27 Jan 2010 22:42

Yes that's true Berona on two counts. The tree is public knowledge - after all the records are there for all to see. As for inaccuracies (sp?) - I found one ancestor having her last child at 58. When I queried it the person who "owned" the tree said "well it isn't unknown for a woman to have a child at that age" purleeeese!! Turned out to be a grandchild which I suspected. Having said that Tec - if the info. tallies with yours then that sounds good.

I'm listening to Gordon Lightfoot - I do love his music:-)

Tec, I would still contact the other person as they may have more information than is displayed publicly. things like photos letters etc

Tecwyn Report 27 Jan 2010 22:53

Good Morning Berona,
That's good advice - I have learned not to accept everything on others trees. I had a woman contact me some time ago regarding my tree - she was vaguely connected. She claimed to be a proffessional genealogist, but her tree was completely and utterly chaotic. Example half my relatives were missing, and people I've never heard of in their place.
It was hysterical - and best ignored

Persephone Report 27 Jan 2010 23:07

I have a fellow tree researcher - I worry how he collects names - has about 27,000 and I have mentioned him before because he grabbed a few members from the other side of my family - thinking they were related to someone with the same father's first and surname on his tree. I said here that I gave him a smack - he always e-mails me back with a "Thank you Norma" and all is quiet for a few days and then his extra 5 or 6 people have been removed. So as a reward I gave hime some more info on one of his relatives (not mine) so he could add a spouse.... always taught to reward good behaviour.

I listened to the interview - he said some only children are good (she says sitting here with her halo glowing) etc and some not just the same as with those with siblings. One observancy was that we only children don't mind being alone. OH is never quite sure what I will come up with - my thinking process is often quite bizarre - but we both have a similar sense of humour as do the two girls... my eldest SIL is always about a week behind us.

Tec - Allan is right in that you might get more information/photos if you do contact this person.

I gave access to my tree to a lady who boasted more than four thousand names in her tree - 'all over the world' - and named lots of countries! My research shows that both OH's and my own ancestors didn't seem to move out of their own counties in the last three or four centuries! I still haven't worked out how she is related - and she gave me no assistance in finding out either! However, she had her own website for a while, and was proud of her university degrees - plus she was a professional genealogist as well! ??? Given time, we meet them all on here!

Yes I will contact this person - his tree is very well done with photo's, certs etc.......seems like a good contact.
That woman you refer to Berona sounds awfully like the one that contacted me. But for all her qualifications I concluded she was a nutcase. She had my Gt Grandfather arriving on a ship at Liverpool from Australia in 1876, when I knew for a fact that he never left his birth village.

Perse - I often wondered what it must be like to be an only child. I am the eldest of five. I never seemed to have much in common with my siblings, and am now only in regular contact with one.
