Be lovely ot have a BBQ at xmas,We hardly had any in summer this year so an xmas one is out.

My grandmother's mother was English so my gran only knew the traditional way of cooking for Christmas. She passed this onto my mother, who I remember seeing with perspiration pouring off her face as she prepared the traditional lunch on a hot Christmas day - and we didn't feel hungry enough to eat it, but would stuff it in for her sake. We then wanted to lie down after lunch, feeling bloated. She would then prepare a cold evening 'banquet' using the cold ham, turkey, duck, etc. with cold pudding, fruit salad and cold custard.

I just remember when she bought a refrigerator and learned how to make ice cream, which replaced the cold custard. Mum didn't feel right when we told her to stop sweating over a hot stove. She argued "but it's Christmas!".

She died before microwaves and home air conditioning were invented but I'm sure she would have updated. In fact, I'm quite sure that if our immigrant ancestors had been able to live longer than normal - they too, would have updated. They just didn't have the air conditioning, freezers, ready-mades, etc, that are available now. These days, we can prepare ahead and serve up nice cold meals from the fridge - or if we want to be traditional, we can cool the house down first and enjoy the hot meal. They didn't have the choices that we have now.

Hubby has just made a gluten free Christmas cake and pudding. We still have the traditional turkey, ham and baked veggie lunch and prawns thrown in. Last year we went to a friend's house and had a BBQ. My dad always expected a roast duck for Christmas day.

If the grandparents were still alive, they would be having a fit at the thought of cold salads and cheesecake for the festive day, lol. I can just hear the scorn in my grandmother's voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They wouldn't be too impressed with their grandchild (me) watching the likes of Home and Away either ;-)

Oh Marion - I'm not a 'picky' person, but I can't let you get away with spelling our Kangaroos as Kankaroos!....Please!!!

Yes, our 'festive' season is festive. Time to party, party, party! Beach parties, barbecues, and of course, holidays! Schools are closed for approx. six weeks from to-day, so lots of parents take their holidays at the same time. Many factories close - particularly those whose products sell as presents - they have delivered and the pressure is off until new orders are received, so they prefer to cope with employees all off at the same time and all back on deck at the same time too.

As for the snow on Christmas cards - most of us have parents, grandparents, etc. who came from the UK - and who brought their traditions with them - so snow on Christmas cards, it has to be! Those with the 'sunny' scenes on them are the ones we send overseas! Many people still have roast turkey and pudding, but most now have a mixture of hot and cold - hot or cold ham, etc. and lots of salads. The pudding is replaced with cheesecakes, ice cream, etc (which weren't known at the time that our ancestors left the UK).

I thought it really odd to see some of the Australian xmas cards.KanGaroos,sunshine,emus etc. where ours are usually snow scenes and wooly hats etc lol

Haha Marion so true, I think the novelty would quickly wear off!!!! I had a Christmas in England in 1983, but no snow.

Berona you could be right. I don't know if I'll live to see that. All the dams are pretty full around here, so the water supply is very healthy at the moment.

Kim - you might experience snow at Christmas yet, the way the seasons are changing. I'm sure that in a few more generations, Aussies will be trying to keep warm and the Poms will be going to the beach for Christmas!

I had one Christmas in England. Great experience, but enough. I still prefer to celebrate the 'festive season' in the summer, rather than winter - but I suppose it's a matter of what we are used to.

Oh, I didnt realise thats it off now for four weeks. I'll just need to watch the news at 6pm lol.

White with frost here and it looks like there has been a dusting of snow.

Snow looks great on cards and thats it Kim.Last year we had it for about 4 weeks. The mounds of snow piled up at road sides had to be lifted as it was so cold it didnt melt.

4 weeks! Boo Hoo! Even OH misses it and he'doesnt watch'!!

It's been cool here in Aus. not like summer at all. I would love to experience a white Christmas just once - well not going to happen here!!!!!

Oh, that's awful for you - having a four week break just before the end of the series! Perhaps it was felt that enough people watch it to warrant 'holding' it while they celebrated Christmas and New Year and might miss it.
There will only be a few episodes and it will be stopped again until the next series - without Charlie, we know - but I wonder if anyone else will be leaving too?

Anyway,as I was saying. We are at the part where Brax is being set up for the robbery. I though that 'Hayley' was up to no good lol.how dare she do the dirty on him.

Weather has been windy,wet and cold.Last Thursday was really bad gales,as far as I know its going to be the same down south this week.
