I am still trying to find a home for this photograph. I now know that this gentleman lived with his children at Woldingham Park Surrey but was missing from the 1901 census. The children were left in the charge of a companion.

He was also a Fellow Of The Royal Geographical Society. FRGS.

Hoping for some success this year x

Lainey that was a really kind act on your part.
I would NEVER have thought of buying the photo. I would have , as I often do, stand and look at it and say things like... "how sad that this is here and not with a family."
Nice one Lainey, and the others who did the searches. Very interesting... clever !

Hi Lainey,
Other passenger lists can be found via ancestry & findmypast...at this time I have'nt renewed my sub to ancestry. This is a very interesting thread & hope more positive results will ensue.

Hello AnotherCanuck, thank you for the info you have added, very interesting. It looks quite possible that the family have emigrated to Canada including Mabel. I will try to find any descendants of Mabel and Horace.

Does anyone know of any other passenger lists for USA or Canada apart from Ellis Island Passenger lists.

Many thanks to everyone. I will keep you all informed of the outcome.

Found the following re google...
Horace & Mabel Coton (nee Skerry) resided at 1925 Forrester St, Saanich Victoria. They took up residence shortly after their marriage in 1914 & remained there until their deaths. Mabel (1885-1946) & Horace (1884-1956).
They came to Canada from England in 1904 & 1910 respectively. Perhaps the remaining Skerry family came out to BC for the wedding? Horace was an accountant & later assessor with Saanich Municipality.

AnotherCanuck Report 9 Mar 2010 02:58

Noticed the marriage took place within a month after the Skerry's arrival to Vict BC Canada.
Re the location of 1901 Census Woldingham Surrey. I once lived very close by to this little village!
A small world indeed it is...lol

Hello Gwyn in Kent, thanks for the tip. I just checked the Ellis Island Passenger Lists and this is what I found:

George Edward Skerry passenger No 27, left Liverpool on the Aquitania and arrived at Ellis Island on 26 June 1914. He was 58yrs old. He paid for his own ticket and for the ticket for his final destination. He had been to the USA previously. He was in transit and on his way home to 614 Majuza??? St, Victoria BC Canada. Born in Kent England he was 5 foot 4 inches tall with a fresh complexion, grey hair and blue eyes. Travelling with him were:

Edward Cecil Skerry, passenger No 28single 5 foot 6 inches tall with dark complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. The age fits.

Gertrude Evelyn Skerry, passenger NO 29 single woman, aged about 30yrs. 5 foot 5 inches tall. Dark complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.

So George Edward and Edward Cecil Skerry fit so far, not sure about Gertrude though. So possibly George died in Victoria Canada in August 1930. Is there any way I can check this does anyone know?

Thanks for the help everyone.

Well done for saving this.

I've been having a look at death registrations and have matched all the 74 years old people dying to their births.

I wonder if he died abroad ?

I have Skerrett family and have often found them with an H instead of a K. ie Sherrett, ...so that might help find a match.

EDIT
I had a look on Google.
Someone with that name, right age, travelled to Canada

Hi PollyPoppet, yes I think that is him. Thank you for taking the time to look up this info. Hopefully someone will recognise these are their family members and claim the photo.

Take care Lainey

Thank you Rita, it was lucky this pic had a name on it otherwise it would have remained in the suitcase it came from. Last year I managed to find another pic at the same bootsale which was 112 yrs old. It was a small military group. I managed to trace the Great nephew of one of the men in the photo to Holland. The picture is now back in the hands of a family member where it should rightly be. Such a shame so many of these photos have no names or markings and that they will remain lost forever. It is such a buzz to find their true homes.

Take care, Lainey
