Gwyn in Kent Report 17 Apr 2010 11:38

Let's hope everyone can travel safely soon.

I hadn't thought about the far-ranging implications of the airport closures in countries not affected by a local ban.
I was reading a report about flowers and veg. from Kenya not being able to be sent and that in turn will mean loss of wages to poor families who rely on agricultual work picking and harvesting etc.

I wonder how soon the shops here will increase prices because of scarcity of certain products.

Some limited flights to and from Scotland have resumed today, after consultation with the met office...... BBC News .... so I would expect to see the airports beginning to resume flights as the cloud drifts past them, to places that are no longer affected, or that weren't affected anyway. I reckon it'll be done on a bit by bit basis.... otherwise there will be chaos!

Daff xxxx who is hoping that Joy's son will be home soon!! xxxx

My niece is in Rio de Janeiro at the moment, and my daughter is in Thailand - they certainly choose the 'best' places to holiday!! LOL
Niece due home soon, daughter not due back for a week - but they are expecting a second, bigger eruption of a nearby volcano in Iceland!

Hubbie stuck abroad told they may get a flight back tomorrow or Saturday.
He has just gone to hit the shops to get new underpants and socks.!!!!!!!
Had only gone for 3 day business trip That will teach him not to take spares for those just in case emergancies.

Brendan Jones, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: “At present the Icelandic eruption is not a big one, although we have to wait to see if there are further eruptions.

“The ash that will come over the UK will not be a huge plume but will be diffused and will feature small ash particles.”

He went on: “It will be difficult to detect and the only visible sign could be lurid sunsets that often are a feature after an eruption.

“Ash particles from eruptions can spread widely which is why Sweden and Norway could get ash. The ash at present is moving south east from Iceland and will probably be clear of the UK within 24 to 36 hours as long as there are no further disruptions.”

The concern is that the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, which has sent the cloud of ash into the sky, is the first in nearly 200 years and geophysicists fear it could trigger a much larger explosion of nearby Mount Katla.

Katla is described as “enormously powerful” and because it lies under a glacier its eruption would cause a huge glacial outburst flood and could spread its shadow over a much larger area.

Over the years, volcanic erup
