I decided to have a look to see what I could spend my clubcard vouchers on, cinema....nights out.... software..... I then selected it and for just £15 worth of club card vouchers you can purchase the Platinum version of Family Tree Maker, ( I already have it and it's great!) the reason why I'm writing this is that for those of you that don't know.... the software comes with 6months FREE Ancestry essentials membership, well at least it should, check it out. The Ancestry website currently charge £59.99 and Amazon £35.97.

Hi Leanne and Deanna, I belong to Ancestry and pay (through the nose) each year by credit card.

But it is so worth it and I can go online any time I like and I find it so helpful.

And no, they are not paying me to say this (wonders if she might have missed a trick...)

Oh I agree Helen, it is a great buy.
When anyone says it is too much, I can justify it with the fact that I don't smoke, don't drink and if I counted the money that I spent on myself over the years....... to use the adverts attitude.
*I'M WORTH IT* ;-0)

Hi Deanna & Helen,

I have been a member of Ancestry for a good few years now, I also teach a beginners family history course and I ALWAYS sing the praises of their website and their software to my group as I have it myself. One of my classes is a brief introduction to the website. (I'm not been paid by Ancestry either!)

Regarding the software, you don't have to register the subscription part until you are ready to make use of it. For personal and work reasons, I contacted Ancestry and asked them about delaying the registration of the subscription part and they said it would be OK for at least 6 months if not a year. And when I did it I ended up with 9 months not 6!

Wow, thanks for this - I didn't realise you could get that. I currently use Legacy and often wondered what might be like to try something else. Anyone any views on how good a program it is? I will certainly use my points!

Cheers,
Rachel

Hi Rachel

It's great! each new version of the software brings new bits and pieces, the 2010 version has a lot more reports and charts in it.

The facility within the software to source your research from (be it for an individual or a whole group of people) is really good, within this I store everything on it, pictures, certificates, census returns and any other documents associated with my research. Also once you have sourced something, i.e a census return, it's really easy to link the other family members in.

There is also a facility to convert your reports to PDF or RTF files to send to fellow researchers.

I have previously used Family Historian and I prefer Family Tree Maker, I haven't used Legacy though so I cannot compare. I assume Legacy can store your research as a GEDCOM file, if so, Family Tree Maker will open it no probs. For £15 in Tesco vouchers with 6 months Ancestry Access, it's well worth the risk!

This is a very old thread but I think it is still valid.

I think I read somewhere on the Tesco site that it now "costs" £19 worth of Clubcard vouchers and that you get 6 months Premium membership of Ancestry.

HOWEVER..........

......check that the software works with your version of Windows - I know there were some issues with Win 8/8.1

2014 is the latest version.

It should be fine with Win 7 but I think there are issues with Win 8.1 and possibly Win 8 after you run the update.

You sign in with the email address you use for Clubcard and a password.
There is then (usually) another security layer which asks you to input three of the numbers from your Clubcard account (long number on your plastic card).
